Target Information
In response to environmental stress, cells increase expression of heat shock proteins (HSPs). HSPB1 (also known as HSP27) is a small heat shock protein acting as a molecular chaperone to maintain denatured proteins in a folding-competent state. It contributes to stress resistance and actin organization. HSP27 regulates phosphorylation and axonal transport of neurofilament proteins. Mutations in the gene are associated with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease 2F and distal hereditary motor neuronopathy type 2B.
