Target Information
Influenza A virus is a major public health threat. Novel influenza virus strains caused by genetic drift and viral recombination emerge periodically, leading to pandemics. Influenza A infects various animals, with all subtypes found in birds. Subtypes are classified by hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) combinations.
HA binds to sialic acid-containing receptors on the cell surface, facilitating virus attachment and internalization. It plays a critical role in host range and virulence determination. As a class I viral fusion protein, HA mediates viral penetration into the cytoplasm through membrane fusion. Low pH in endosomes triggers conformational changes in HA2, exposing the fusion peptide and enabling pore formation for viral entry.
