Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and participate in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA ratio—opposite to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack 5S rRNA. Protein composition varies significantly among species, complicating identification by sequence homology. MRPL15 encodes a 39S subunit protein belonging to the EcoL15 ribosomal protein family. A pseudogene for MRPL15 is located on chromosome 15q.
