Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and assist in protein synthesis within mitochondria. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA ratio, opposite to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack 5S rRNA. Protein sequences vary across species, hindering recognition by homology. This gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, with two transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms. A pseudogene is located on chromosome 5q.
