Target Information
TEF1 (Transcriptional enhancer factor 1), a member of the TEA/ATTS domain family, is a nuclear protein expressed in various cell types and regulates numerous genes.
TEF family members possess a conserved DNA-binding domain. TEF-1 binds to GT-IIC, SphI/II, and M-CAT sequences, and also to the proximal regulatory element (PRE) of transforming growth factor-alpha, which is overexpressed in many cancers.
TEF-1 represses transcription in placental cells and is phosphorylated by several PKC isozymes, reducing its DNA-binding capability. This phosphorylation suggests a role in PKC inhibition.
TEF-1 also interacts with tumor antigen (TAg), implying a potential role in tumorigenesis. Dimerization may be essential for TEF-1’s function as a transcriptional regulator.
