Target Information

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are proteolytic enzymes that degrade connective tissue components. They share a conserved activation mechanism and metal-binding site, and are regulated by tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs). MMP2 is synthesized as a 631 amino acid proenzyme, activated by cleavage of the first 80 amino acids, and contains propeptide, catalytic, and hemopexin domains.

MMP2 plays a key role in tissue remodeling and angiogenesis. Mutations in the MMP2 gene are associated with Winchester syndrome and Nodulosis-Arthropathy-Osteolysis (NAO) syndrome. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
