Target Information
Cellular uptake of iron occurs via receptor-mediated endocytosis of ligand-occupied transferrin receptor into specialized endosomes. Endosomal acidification leads to iron release, and the apotransferrin-receptor complex is recycled to the cell surface. Transferrin receptor is essential for erythrocyte and nervous system development. Serum transferrin receptor (sTfR) serves as a biomarker for detecting EPO misuse and diagnosing anemia related to various conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, pregnancy, irritable bowel syndrome, and HIV.
