TGF-beta는 Smad 단백질 패밀리를 통해 배아 발달 및 종양형성과 같은 다양한 세포 과정을 조절하는 사이토카인입니다. Ski는 조류 레트로바이러스의 transforming protein과 상동인 포유류 단백질로, Smad 단백질의 인산화를 방지하여 DNA 결합 및 하위 유전자 전사 활성화를 억제합니다. 또한 Ski는 BMP 특이적 Smad 단백질에도 결합하여 BMP 신호전달을 차단합니다.
