Target Information
This gene encodes a highly conserved nonhistone protein, a member of the heterochromatin protein family. The protein is enriched in heterochromatin and associated with centromeres.
It contains:
- An N-terminal chromodomain that binds histone proteins via methylated lysine residues
- A C-terminal chromoshadow domain responsible for homodimerization and interaction with chromatin-associated nonhistone proteins
This protein plays an important role in the epigenetic regulation of chromatin structure and gene expression. Several related pseudogenes are located on chromosomes 1, 3, and X. Multiple alternatively spliced variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
