Target Information
Calpains, including Calpain 1 (CAPN1), are calcium-activated neutral proteases that function as nonlysosomal, intracellular cysteine proteases. Mammalian calpains include ubiquitous, stomach-specific, and muscle-specific proteins. The ubiquitous forms are heterodimers composed of distinct large catalytic subunits and a common small regulatory subunit.
The CAPN1 gene encodes the large subunit of the ubiquitous calpain 1 enzyme. Multiple transcript variants encoding two different isoforms have been identified.
Diseases associated with CAPN1 include Spastic Paraplegia 76 (Autosomal Recessive) and Spasticity.
