Target Information

Protein C is a vitamin K-dependent plasma glycoprotein that is cleaved to its activated form by the thrombin–thrombomodulin complex. In its activated form, Protein C contains a serine protease domain and functions in the degradation of activated coagulation factors V and VIII.
It is produced in the liver as a 62 kDa proenzyme, which is activated by thrombin bound to endothelial surface receptors. The active enzyme (55 kDa) cleaves factor Va and VIIIa, inhibiting blood coagulation.
Normal human plasma contains approximately 1–3 ng/mL of active Protein C and about 3 µg/mL of the proenzyme.
Mutations in the Protein C gene are associated with thrombophilia due to protein C deficiency, neonatal purpura fulminans, and recurrent venous thrombosis.
