Target Information
Alpha 2-Macroglobulin (A2M) is an approximately 720-kDa homotetrameric glycoprotein composed of four identical ~180 kDa subunits.
A2M shares with other alpha-macroglobulins, such as complement components C3 and C4 and the pregnancy zone protein (PZP), a broad binding capacity for various ligands.
This enables alpha-macroglobulins to function as humoral defense barriers against foreign peptides in plasma.
A2M interacts with and captures virtually any proteinase, acting as a panprotease inhibitor.
In the brains of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients, A2M has been localized to diffuse amyloid plaques, suggesting an important role in AD pathophysiology.
