PCDH9 유전자는 프로토카드헤린(protocadherin) 및 카드헤린(cadherin) 초과가족에 속하는 막단백질을 암호화합니다. 이 단백질들은 칼슘 존재하에 신경 조직에서 세포 접착을 매개하며, 신경 시냅스 접합부에서 신호 전달에 관여할 수 있습니다. 다른 프로토카드헤린 유전자들과 마찬가지로, 이 유전자는 여러 카드헤린 도메인과 막관통 영역을 암호화하는 큰 엑손을 포함합니다. 또한, 서로 다른 아이소폼을 암호화하는 대체 스플라이싱 전사체 변이체가 보고되었습니다.
