Target Information

ABCA4 (ATP-Binding Cassette, Subfamily A, Member 4), also known as ABCR, is encoded by the ABCA4 gene. It belongs to the ATP-binding cassette transporter sub-family A (ABC1) found exclusively in multicellular eukaryotes.
This gene is mapped to 1p21–p13 and expressed exclusively in retinal photoreceptor cells, mediating transport of essential molecules across the photoreceptor cell membrane.
Immunofluorescence microscopy and Western blot analyses show ABCR presence in foveal, peripheral cone, and rod photoreceptors. Loss of ABCR function is associated with foveal cone degeneration observed in Stargardt macular dystrophy.
