이 유전자가 암호화하는 단백질은 type II 막 단백질로서 lactosylceramide를 기질로 사용하여 GM3를 형성하는 효소입니다.
이 단백질은 glycosyltransferase family 29에 속하며, 골지체에 위치할 수 있습니다.
ST3GAL5 유전자 변이는 Amish 영아 간질 증후군과 관련이 있습니다.
