Target Information

This gene encodes coagulation factor XIII B subunit. Coagulation factor XIII is the last zymogen activated in the blood coagulation cascade. Plasma factor XIII is a heterotetramer composed of two A and two B subunits. The A subunits have catalytic function, while the B subunits act as plasma carrier molecules without enzymatic activity.

Platelet factor XIII consists only of two A subunits, identical to those in plasma. Upon activation by thrombin cleavage and calcium ions, plasma factor XIII dissociates its B subunits and yields the active enzyme factor XIIIa, which catalyzes γ-glutamyl-ε-lysine crosslinking between fibrin molecules to stabilize clots.

Factor XIII deficiency is classified as:

  • Type I: Lack of both A and B subunits
  • Type II: Lack of A subunit only

These defects can lead to lifelong bleeding tendencies, impaired wound healing, and habitual abortion.
