Target Information

AHR (Ah Receptor) belongs to a family of proteins that includes its dimerization partner ARNT (HIF-1 Beta) and the Drosophila proteins PER and SIM.
AHR contains an N-terminal PAS domain (~200 amino acids) and is found in various tissues. It binds specific DNA enhancer sequences and initiates transcription of the cytochrome P-450 (CYPIA1) gene.
AHR encodes a ligand-activated transcription factor regulating biological responses to planar aromatic hydrocarbons. It controls xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes such as cytochrome P450, with ligands including polycyclic and halogenated aromatic compounds (e.g., TCDD).
In non-ligand activated cells, AHR is complexed with HSP90 in the cytoplasm. Upon activation, AHR translocates to the nucleus, forming a heterodimer with ARNT to bind DNA.
Diseases associated with AHR include eosinophilic fasciitis and seborrheic dermatitis.
