Target Information
Vitamin K epoxide reductase complex subunit 1 (VKORC1) is the enzyme responsible for reducing vitamin K 2,3-epoxide to its enzymatically activated form, which is essential for blood clotting.
This activated form of vitamin K is required for the carboxylation of glutamic acid residues in certain blood-clotting proteins.
Vitamin K deficiency or inhibition by warfarin can lead to fatal bleeding. VKORC1 is sensitive to warfarin, and mutations in this gene may be associated with vitamin K–dependent clotting factor deficiencies and warfarin resistance in humans and rats.
