Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are involved in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, in contrast to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins that make up mitoribosomes vary significantly across species, both in sequence and biochemical properties, making homology-based identification difficult. The MRPS27 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein that may functionally interact with death-associated protein 3 (DAP3).
