Target Information
The oxytocin receptor (OXTR) belongs to the G-protein coupled receptor family. Its activity is mediated by G proteins that activate a phosphatidylinositol-calcium second messenger system. The receptor consists of 389 amino acids and has a molecular weight of approximately 43,000 kDa.
The oxytocin-oxytocin receptor system plays a key role in uterine contractions during parturition and milk ejection. Oxytocin receptors are expressed in myoepithelial cells of the mammary gland and in the myometrium and endometrium of the uterus at the end of pregnancy.
Additionally, oxytocin receptors are present in the central nervous system, mediating behaviors such as maternal bonding, social memory and recognition, sexual and aggressive behaviors, and responses to stress and anxiety.
