Target Information
CD44 is a 100 kDa type 1 transmembrane glycoprotein widely expressed on human leukocytes, white matter of the brain, and some epithelial cells of the intestine and breast. Several isoforms exist, including CD44H, the predominant form in normal tissues.
CD44 functions as a receptor for hyaluronic acid (HA) and plays roles in cell-cell interactions, adhesion, and migration. It contributes to lymphocyte activation, recirculation, and homing, and may be up-regulated in certain carcinomas associated with metastatic potential.
CD44 expression is found in hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cells, epithelial tissues, and filopodia of keratinocytes. Bone marrow myeloid cells and memory T cells express CD44 at high levels, while peripheral B and T cells can upregulate CD44 expression upon stimulation.
Transcripts undergo complex alternative splicing, producing many distinct isoforms that contribute to CD44’s structural and functional diversity.
Diseases associated with CD44 dysfunction include superficial keratitis and lichen sclerosus, and CD44 may be related to tumor metastasis formation.
