Target Information
GLUT4 is a member of the solute carrier family 2 (facilitated glucose transporter) family. It encodes an insulin-regulated glucose transporter protein. In the absence of insulin, the protein resides within muscle and adipose cells. Upon insulin stimulation, it relocates to the cell surface to transport glucose. Mutations in this gene are associated with noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM).
