Target Information
This gene belongs to the subfamily of ubiquitously expressed heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoproteins (hnRNPs). The hnRNPs are RNA-binding proteins that form complexes with heterogeneous nuclear RNA (hnRNA). These proteins are associated with pre-mRNAs in the nucleus and influence pre-mRNA processing and other aspects of mRNA metabolism and transport.
While all hnRNPs are present in the nucleus, some shuttle between the nucleus and the cytoplasm. The hnRNP K protein has three KH domains that bind RNA and is distinct in its strong binding preference for poly(C). It is also thought to play a role in cell cycle progression. Several alternatively spliced transcript variants have been described, though not all are fully characterized.
