The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the serine protease inhibitor (serpin) superfamily, which plays a central role in regulating physiological processes such as coagulation, fibrinolysis, development, malignancy, and inflammation.
The gene product may function in a growth-control or growth-suppressing pathway and, when impaired, could be involved in pancreatic carcinogenesis.
This protein is part of the plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 family, a subset of serpins that act as tissue-specific tPA inhibitors. Two alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct protein isoforms have been identified for this gene.
