Target Information
This gene encodes a G-protein-coupled receptor for melanocyte-stimulating hormone and adrenocorticotropic hormone, expressed in tissues other than the adrenal cortex and melanocytes. It maps to the same region as the locus for benign neonatal epilepsy. Mice deficient for this gene show increased fat mass despite reduced food intake, indicating a role in energy homeostasis regulation. Mutations in this gene are linked to susceptibility to obesity in humans.
