Target Information
The zinc transporter ZIP3 (SLC39A3) belongs to a family of divalent ion transporters. Zinc is essential for cellular growth, development, and differentiation. ZIP3 knockout mice show no phenotypic differences compared to wild-type, but combined ZIP1–3 knockouts under zinc-deficient conditions exhibit developmental abnormalities, indicating a noncompensatory role for ZIP1–3 proteins in zinc deficiency. ZIP2 and ZIP3 are downregulated in human prostate adenocarcinoma, suggesting their role in zinc retention within cells.
