Target Information
Leptin is a 167 amino acid protein hormone that regulates body weight, metabolism, and reproductive function. It is approximately 16 kDa and encoded by the ob (obese) gene.
Leptin is mainly secreted by adipocytes, correlating with total body fat mass. Smaller amounts are also produced by gastric epithelial cells and the placenta.
Leptin receptors are highly expressed in hypothalamic regions involved in appetite and energy balance, as well as in T lymphocytes and vascular endothelial cells.
It influences feeding behavior, thermogenesis, energy expenditure, hematopoiesis, angiogenesis, wound healing, inflammation, immune responses, and developmental processes.
Defects in leptin production can cause severe hereditary obesity in rodents and humans.
