Target Information
Beta-catenin is an adherens junction (AJ) protein involved in cell-cell adhesion and epithelial layer maintenance. It interacts with E-cadherin and alpha-catenin to anchor the E-cadherin complex to the actin cytoskeleton.
Additionally, beta-catenin associates with cytoskeletal complexes containing APC protein and microtubules, and participates in signaling pathways involving tyrosine kinases, phosphatases, and Wnt/Wingless.
This interplay regulates morphogenesis and is linked to various cancers, including pilomatrixoma, medulloblastoma, colorectal, ovarian, and other solid tumors.
In the nucleus, beta-catenin co-activates Lef/Tcf transcription factors to promote genes such as cyclin D and c-myc, driving cell proliferation and tumorigenesis.
