The NRG3 gene is part of the neuregulin family, encoding ligands for ERBB3 and ERBB4 tyrosine kinase receptors.
Ligand binding activates intracellular signaling pathways that regulate:

• Cellular proliferation
• Migration
• Differentiation
• Survival or apoptosis

NRG3 activates tyrosine phosphorylation of ERBB4 and influences neuroblast proliferation, migration, and differentiation via ERBB4 signaling.
It also promotes mammary differentiation during embryogenesis.
Genetic studies link NRG3 to schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder.
Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms.
