Target Information
Alpha Tubulin is part of a heterodimer consisting of alpha and beta tubulin subunits. These subunits (~55 kDa each) are homologous but not identical. The alpha-beta tubulin heterodimer forms the basic building block of microtubules—cylindrical filamentous structures present in nearly all eukaryotic cells.
Microtubules provide structural support, serve as transport lines within the cell, and play a key role in mitosis. They are composed of alpha and beta tubulin, while gamma tubulin is critical for microtubule nucleation. Multiple alpha and beta tubulin genes are highly conserved among species. The alpha tubulin gene is highly similar to the mouse and rat Tuba1 gene, with expression predominantly found in morphologically differentiated neurologic cells.
