Target Information

C-reactive protein (CRP) is a major cyclic, pentameric acute phase protein composed of five identical, noncovalently bound, nonglycosylated subunits. Each subunit consists of 206 amino acids with a molecular weight of approximately 24 kDa. CRP is synthesized by the liver and its plasma concentration increases significantly during inflammatory responses. It initiates the classical complement cascade, binds to nuclear components such as chromatin and histones, and plays a key role in innate immunity.

CRP levels can increase 100–1000 fold in response to injury, infection, or inflammation. It functions as an opsonin, activates monocytes/macrophages, and may act as a scavenger during cell necrosis. Elevated basal CRP levels are associated with increased risk of hypertension and cardiovascular disease.
