Specificity Comments:
AKR1B1 (aldose reductase) is a member of the aldo/keto reductase superfamily, comprising over 40 known enzymes and proteins. It catalyzes the reduction of aldehydes, including the aldehyde form of glucose, and is implicated in diabetic complications by converting glucose to sorbitol. Decreased expression has been observed in adrenocortical cancer, suggesting a role in adrenal tumorigenesis. AKR1B1 may serve as a malignancy marker for adrenal tumor diagnosis.
