Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are essential for protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes where this ratio is reversed. Mammalian mitoribosomes lack the 5S rRNA found in prokaryotic ribosomes. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary significantly among species, affecting sequence homology and biochemical properties. The MRPS34 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein, and alternate splice variants have been described though their full-length nature remains undetermined.
