Crystallins are separated into two classes: taxon-specific (enzyme) and ubiquitous. The ubiquitous class constitutes the major proteins of the vertebrate eye lens, maintaining transparency and refractive index. Lens central fiber cells lose nuclei during development, so crystallins are synthesized and retained throughout life, providing exceptional stability.
Mammalian lens crystallins are divided into alpha, beta, and gamma families; beta and gamma crystallins form a superfamily. Alpha and beta families are further divided into acidic and basic groups.
Beta-crystallins are the most heterogeneous, differing by the presence of a C-terminal extension (present in the basic group but absent in the acidic group). They can form homo- or heterodimers with other beta-crystallins.
The CRYBA2 gene belongs to the beta acidic group, with three alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding identical proteins.
