Target Information

CD83 cell surface antigen is a 40–45 kDa glycoprotein expressed by peripheral blood dendritic cells. Peripheral lymphocytes can be induced to express low levels of CD83 after stimulation with agents such as Con A or PHA. In immunohistology, CD83 is strongly expressed by interfollicular interdigitating reticulum cells and weakly by cells within germinal centres. It is also expressed by Langerhans cells in the skin.

The CD83 antigen is a 186-amino-acid single-chain glycoprotein belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily. It consists of an extracellular V-type Ig-like domain, a transmembrane region, and a short 40-amino-acid cytoplasmic tail. CD83 undergoes extensive post-translational glycosylation, resulting in a molecular weight approximately twice that of its core protein.

CD83+ cells exhibit a unique surface immunophenotype distinct from T cells, B cells, NK cells, and myelomonocytic lineages. They coexpress high levels of MHC class II molecules and various lineage markers, including T cell (CD2, CD5), B cell (CD40, CD78), and myeloid cell markers (CD13, CD33, CD36), as well as cytokine receptors and other surface molecules.
