Target Information
SHBG (Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin) is a steroid-binding plasma protein secreted by the liver. It regulates steroid hormone availability by transporting androgens and estrogens in the bloodstream as dimers of identical monomers. Low plasma SHBG levels are linked to obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes. Genetic polymorphisms in SHBG are associated with polycystic ovary syndrome and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
