Target Information
Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) is a chymotrypsin-like serine protease belonging to the kallikrein family, produced by the prostate epithelium and abundant in seminal fluid. PSA is detectable in the sera of patients with prostatic carcinoma and is primarily complexed with the liver-derived serine protease inhibitor alpha-1-antichymotrypsin (ACT). A higher proportion of serum PSA is complexed with ACT in prostate cancer than in benign prostate hyperplasia. PSA serves as a marker to confirm prostatic acinar cell origin in primary and metastatic carcinoma and to distinguish it from non-prostatic carcinoma mimics.
