Target Information
Adipose tissue plays a major role in regulating physiological and pathological processes such as metabolism and immunity by producing and secreting bioactive molecules known as adipokines.
The C1q/TNF-related proteins (CTRPs) 1–7 form a conserved family of adipokines structurally related to adiponectin. Unlike adiponectin, which is expressed exclusively by adipocytes, CTRPs are expressed in various tissues and act mainly on liver and muscle to regulate glucose and lipid metabolism.
Structural studies indicate a link between TNF and C1q-containing proteins, suggesting a common ancestral origin in innate immunity. Multiple isoforms of mouse CTRP4 have been reported.
