Target Information

Periostin (PN), also known as osteoblast-specific factor 2 (OSF-2), is a disulfide-linked protein originally identified as an osteoblast-specific factor. It is a secreted protein that binds heparin and acts as a ligand for α(V)β(3) and α(V)β(5) integrins. In preosteoblasts, Periostin functions as a cell adhesion molecule, contributing to osteoblast recruitment, spreading, and attachment.

Periostin is mainly expressed in the lower gastrointestinal tract, aorta, stomach, placenta, uterus, and breast tissues, but is up-regulated in epithelial ovarian tumors and overexpressed in breast cancer. Its expression increases in response to bone morphogenetic protein (BMP2) and transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1). Structurally, Periostin contains a signal sequence, a cysteine-rich domain, four fasciclin-like repeats, and a C-terminal domain.
