Target Information
Methionine is an essential amino acid required for protein synthesis and one-carbon metabolism. Its synthesis is catalyzed by the enzyme methionine synthase, which can become inactive due to oxidation of its cob(I)alamin cofactor. The protein encoded by the MTRR gene regenerates functional methionine synthase via reductive methylation. It belongs to the ferredoxin-NADP(+) reductase (FNR) family of electron transferases. Mutations in this gene are associated with cbl-E complementation group disorders affecting folate/cobalamin metabolism. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms.
