Target Information
Alpha 2-Macroglobulin (A2M) is an approximately 720-kDa homotetrameric glycoprotein composed of four identical ~180 kDa subunits. It shares structural similarity with other alpha-macroglobulins, such as complement components C3 and C4 and pregnancy zone protein (PZP).
A2M acts as a panprotease inhibitor, binding a wide range of ligands and serving as a humoral defense barrier against foreign peptides in plasma. In Alzheimer’s disease patients, A2M localizes to diffuse amyloid plaques, suggesting a role in AD pathogenesis.
