This gene belongs to the beta casein family. Beta casein, along with kappa casein, is secreted in human milk and serves as a primary source of essential amino acids for infants. Together, beta and kappa caseins form spherical micelles that bind important dietary minerals such as calcium and phosphorus. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
