Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and function in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of small 28S and large 39S subunits, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes where this ratio is reversed. Prokaryotic ribosomes contain a 5S rRNA, which is absent in mammalian mitoribosomes. The proteins comprising mitoribosomes vary greatly among species, complicating sequence-based identification. The MRPS21 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein of the ribosomal protein S21P family. Pseudogenes are located on chromosomes 1p, 1q, 9p, 10p, 10q, 16q, and 17q. Sequence data indicate splice variants differing in the 5′ UTR, both encoding the same protein.
