ALOXE3는 lipoxygenase 계열 유전자 중 하나로, 아라키돈산 유래 화합물의 대사에 관여합니다. 이 효소는 12R-hydroperoxyeicosatetraenoic acid(12R-HPETE)로부터 독특한 epoxy alcohol(8R-hydroxy-11R,12R-epoxyeicosa-5Z,9E,14Z-trienoic acid)을 합성하는 hydroperoxide isomerase입니다.
이 epoxy alcohol은 핵 수용체 PPARα를 활성화시켜 표피 분화에 영향을 미칩니다. 해당 유전자의 기능 상실은 선천성 비수포성 각피증(NCIE)과 관련이 있습니다. 이 유전자는 17p13.1에 위치한 lipoxygenase 유전자 클러스터의 일부입니다.
