Target Information

CD44 is a 100 kDa type I transmembrane glycoprotein widely expressed on human leukocytes, brain white matter, and some epithelial cells. It serves as a receptor for hyaluronic acid (HA) and is involved in cell-cell interaction, adhesion, and migration.
CD44 plays roles in lymphocyte activation, recirculation, and homing. Expression can be upregulated in certain carcinomas and may correlate with metastatic potential.
It is expressed by hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cells, epithelial tissues, and filopodia in cultured keratinocytes. Bone marrow myeloid cells and memory T cells express high CD44 levels, while peripheral B and T cells can upregulate expression upon stimulation.
CD44 gene transcripts undergo complex alternative splicing, producing multiple isoforms with distinct functions. Disorders associated with CD44 dysfunction include superficial keratitis and lichen sclerosus, and it may be related to tumor metastasis formation.
