Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are essential for protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with an estimated 75% protein to rRNA composition, compared to prokaryotic ribosomes where this ratio is reversed. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome differ significantly among species, complicating recognition by sequence homology. The MRPS7 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein, analogous to a prokaryotic protein that organizes the 3' domain of 16S rRNA near the P- and A-sites. Pseudogenes corresponding to MRPS7 are located on chromosomes 8p and 12p.
