Target Information
Blood vessel epicardial substance (BVES), also known as Popeye protein 1, is a transmembrane protein involved in cell-cell interactions and adhesion, particularly at tight junctions.
BVES contains an extracellular amino-terminus, three transmembrane domains, and a cytoplasmic carboxyl-terminus.
It is expressed in the developing coronary vascular system — including the proepicardium, migrating epithelial epicardium, delaminated vasculogenic mesenchyme, and vascular smooth muscle cells — where it contributes to heart, epithelial, and muscle cell development during embryogenesis.
BVES accumulates at cell-cell contact points such as filopodia and cell borders, promoting adhesion prior to E-cadherin arrival.
