TRPM5는 transient receptor potential protein family에 속하는 이온 채널 단백질로, 맛 전달 과정에 중요한 역할을 합니다. 이 단백질은 칼슘 활성화 비선택성 양이온 채널로 작용하며 Na⁺, K⁺, Cs⁺ 이온을 통과시킵니다. 낮은 농도의 세포 내 칼슘에 의해 활성화되고, 높은 농도에서는 억제됩니다. 또한 온도 민감성이 높아 15–35°C 사이에서 급격한 전류 증가를 보입니다. 해당 유전자는 염색체 11p15.5의 Beckwith-Wiedemann 증후군 관련 영역에 위치하며, 부계 유전자만 발현되는 것으로 알려져 있습니다.
