Target Information

Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an antioxidant enzyme involved in the defense system against reactive oxygen species (ROS).
SOD catalyzes the dismutation reaction of superoxide radical anion (O₂⁻) to hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), which is then converted to O₂ and H₂O by glutathione peroxidase and catalase.

Several classes of SOD have been identified:

• SOD1 (Cu, Zn-SOD): Intracellular enzyme found in all eukaryotic species, homodimeric 32 kDa enzyme containing one Cu and one Zn ion per subunit.
• SOD2 (Mn-SOD): Mitochondrial matrix enzyme, 80 kDa tetrameric form, located near the mitochondrial respiratory chain.
• SOD3 (EC-SOD): Extracellular Cu, Zn-SOD, heparin-binding multimer expressed in lungs, vessel walls, and airways.
• SOD4 (CCS): Copper chaperone for superoxide dismutase, specifically delivers Cu to Cu/Zn-SOD and may activate it through direct insertion of the Cu cofactor.
