Target Information
Aquaporins (AQP0–AQP10) are water channel proteins widely distributed in mammalian tissues. Multiple AQP types can coexist within the same cell. While most AQPs are selective for water, AQP3, AQP7, AQP9, and one AQP10 isoform also permit urea and glycerol transport. AQP2 is uniquely activated by vasopressin to regulate water reabsorption in kidney collecting ducts. Aquaporins contribute to renal water absorption, pulmonary secretion, lacrimation, and cerebrospinal and aqueous humor balance. In the lung, AQP5 mediates water transport across the apical membrane of type I alveolar epithelial cells.
